HAL Curriculum

Math

     The primary goals of the HAL math program are:  extending the core curriculum, teaching advanced methods of problem solving for increasingly complex questions, and developing a life long love of the field of mathematics.

Materials include:
Edward Zaccaro's Primary Challenge Math, Challenge Math, and Real World Algebra
The Hands-on Algebra Curriculum
Math Olympiads training materials and competitions
Kahn Academy instruction
Hands-on projects that relate the subject of math to the real world

Language Arts

      The primary goals of the HAL reading program are:  extending the core curriculum, teaching higher order skills of analyzing, synthesizing, and evaluating passages, and increasing students' love of advanced literature.

The primary goals of the HAL writing program are:  improving grammar instruction, teaching advanced writing skills needed for full research reports and analytical essays, and using sophisticated projects to teach real-world writing skills.

Materials include:
The College of William and Mary Language Arts Curriculum for the Gifted
Advanced novel units that enhance the College of William and Mary themes
Multiple large written projects including persuasive writing, book publishing, research    papers, historical timelines, and newspapers.
Formal debate instruction
